The Patriot has standard whiplash protection, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the whiplash protection system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Escape doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Patriot and the Escape have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and available all-wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Patriot is safer than the Ford Escape:

Jeep’s powertrain warranty covers the Patriot 40,000 miles longer than Ford covers the Escape. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Escape ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Patriot offers an optional full size spare tire so your trip isn’t interrupted by a flat. A full size spare isn’t available on the Escape, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Insurance will cost less for the Patriot owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Patriot will cost $375 less than the Escape over a five-year period.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Patriot is less expensive to operate than the Escape because typical repairs cost much less on the Patriot than the Escape, including $87 less for a water pump, $96 less for a starter, $95 less for fuel injection, $55 less for a fuel pump, $207 less for a timing belt/chain and $18 less for a power steering pump.

Intellichoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Jeep Patriot will be $2840 to $3801 less than for the Ford Escape.
